Vanessa has been an Abri customer for 25 years, bringing her daughters up in the home she lives in. Family means everything to her, and she loves the area she lives in and being close to her parents. She came to Abri after losing her job during lockdown and ending up quite isolated.
During lockdown I lost my job and I don’t think I realised that I was getting quite isolated. I am close to my neighbour who told me that there was a job club in Millbrook advertising jobs in care, and although I thought I probably wouldn’t have a chance, I went along with her to find out more.
I suffer with anxiety and depression and find, since lockdown, I had got myself in a rut. Plus I realised that if I didn’t do something then I might not be able to manage my home, which really scared me.
The people at the job club were lovely, so welcoming and assuring. They were patient with me and accepted me as I am. The interview I had was great, and when I found out that they were offering me a job I couldn’t believe it. My daughters were chuffed to bits!
I now work 16hrs as a cleaner for a rest home in Shirley. I really like my job and every shift I look forward to seeing my colleagues for a cuppa before we start our work. I work on a rota, and although I feel I am taking longer to learn the ropes, I am getting there slowly. I always try and do my best though as that’s the type of person I am.
I now have a routine, which I like, and although the job is further than I originally wanted to travel and I do get tired, I am getting used to it, and know my commute and where I need to get on/off the bus. I feel better in myself as I think sitting around at home wasn’t doing me any good. I know I had to push myself to do this, but I am so glad I did. I especially liked working over Christmas as it was a pleasure to make other people’s holidays special. I feel content, which is a nice feeling.
I have appreciated the calls made by my Employment Support Advisor as I do need some support understanding my bills and benefits and I am receiving ongoing help with that.
Abri has been fantastic and has really nice people supporting me. I didn’t realise they did things like this and am so glad I took a chance that day for more information.
