Area priorities...
A new Community Investment Plan is being developed through focus groups and resident consultations, and is set to be finalised by the end of 2024. The plan will focus on meeting the needs of residents, empowering the community, and addressing issues related to employment and health. It will include projects aimed at reducing social isolation, improving community safety, and increasing youth engagement.
The Byron Centre at Longwood Park reopened in August 2024 after a refurbishment. We look forward to collaborating with local partners to deliver projects and activities that will benefit the community.
We have launched the Opportunity Hub, providing employment support to local residents. Other teams from Abri will also be on hand to offer guidance on housing, income, and benefits.
Who is your Community Development Officer?
I joined Abri as a Community Development Officer in June 2024. It is great to have the Byron Centre at the heart of Longwood Park, making it easy for residents to join activities and share their feedback. I’m truly grateful to meet so many dedicated community members who have eagerly come forward to share their ideas and collaborate on improving the neighbourhood.
Before this role, I gained extensive experience in community work in Hong Kong. After relocating to the UK with my family in 2021, I spent two years working in homeless services before taking on my current position. I am excited to use my experience to develop projects that address the community's needs.

Key projects in the last three months
With the support of £48,000 grant from Travis Perkins, the refurbished work of the Byron Centre was completed and officially reopened in August 2024. The centre had been fully remodelled and furnished to create a welcoming space for the community, complete with free Wi-Fi access. It will host a diverse range of activities and workshops in collaboration with various local partners and organisations, fostering engagement and connection within the community.

The Community Pantry aims to help local residents access essential food items at a lower cost by using surplus food from partners like FareShare and UK Harvest. It is open to anyone living in the SL3 postcode area, where members can select their own food at significantly reduced prices compared to the market.
The Community Pantry has received positive feedback from the community, growing to 40 members within just four weeks. Residents appreciate the fresh vegetables and wider food options available. In addition to providing essential support to reduce living costs, the Community Pantry also serves as a meeting place for neighbours to connect, exchange ideas, and strengthen community ties.

The Learn & Play Sessions on every Friday morning, organised by the Family Hub of Slough Council, are designed for children aged 0-4 and their parents. A variety of toys and activities are provided for the children. Outreach Workers from the Family Hub engages with parents, sharing valuable parenting knowledge, local resources, and nutrition advice for children. The programme has been well received by families, with stable attendance and a steady influx of new participants. Some parents have expressed interest in undergoing further training to take on roles in running the group long-term.

What's coming up in Longwood Park?
The Community Pantry is open to residents every Thursday from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. Members can shop for 10 to 15 items of food or cleaning and hygiene products each week at significantly lower prices than market value. Starting in November, we will introduce an additional late afternoon session on the first Wednesday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00 PM to better accommodate working people.
From November, we will organize the Coffee Morning for the community on every Wednesday 10am-12pm to provide a social space for the people to meet. This event aims to create a social space for residents to connect, fostering dialogue about the community and encouraging the sharing of ideas.
In December 2024, we will organise Christmas meals for older residents in the community. The goal is to bring older people together, foster connections, and strengthen neighbourhood networks. Volunteers will be recruited to help support this festive event.
The Youth Engagement Programme is being developed with input from young people to provide them with support in employment, education, and connecting with the broader community. By the end of the year, young people will have more opportunities to contribute to shaping this programme, which will form a key part of the new Community Investment Plan.
We are actively recruiting volunteers from the community to support a range of projects, including the Community Pantry, Play & Learn sessions, and Christmas Meals for Older People. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and will receive training in areas such as First Aid and Food Hygiene. Ongoing support will be provided to ensure that volunteers are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to community events.

We have collaborated with the Family Hub to organize "Learn & Play" sessions for children and parents, available every Friday, providing fun for the children and space for parents to connect and share. We also planned activities during school breaks to better meet the needs of the community's children.

Having met the teams at some of our events, you wanted more opportunities to speak with us in person

We have since collaborated with the Employment Team to create the Opportunity Hub, held every Tuesday, where various Abri teams engage with residents face-to-face and provide employment support. Moreover, we keep residents informed about community activities through notice boards, a digital display in the buildings, and posts in the community's Facebook group. We also organise focus groups to hear residents' views on community matters, incorporating their feedback into the new Community Investment Plan for future actions.

It would be good to extend the community pantry opening hours; to support those working during the day, you also told us it would be good to see more cleaning products on offer.

From November, we are extending the opening hours and will be enhancing the pantry offer to provide more of the essential items you identified.
Key successes in the last few months...
- Community Action Day: We had 34 residents participate, sharing their expectations for the Byron Centre and providing valuable feedback about the community.
- Litter Picking Day: Residents came together to clean the community playground, collecting five full bags of rubbish from the area. They expressed interest in organizing litter picking events on a more regular basis.
- Community Pantry: In just six weeks, 40 new members have joined, resulting in 100 visits where members collected over 1,000 kg of surplus food that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
- Focus Groups: Two focus groups were held, allowing residents to voice their needs and concerns.
- Weekly IT Workshop: Every Tuesday, the workshops help residents improve their IT skills for daily life. Participants find the workshops tailored to their needs and enjoy the social space they provide.
- Learn & Play Sessions: These sessions are popular among parents with young children, offering playtime and opportunities for parent-to-parent support. Parents value the space for their children to have fun and appreciate the supportive environment that encourages sharing and connection.
- Since the reopening of the Byron Centre, over 100 residents have dropped in, and more than 10 have expressed interest in volunteering to organize community activities. Residents have shared positive feedback about the community and are eager to contribute to its improvement.
